How to Buy Safely on Alibaba — Tips From Experience

Alibaba is where experienced OCC packers get the best per-unit prices — but it's a different experience from Amazon. Here's what to know before you order.

Set up an account

Just like an Amazon account.  Set this up before you purchase.

Check the Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) First

Every listing has an MOQ — the minimum number of units you must buy to get the listed price. A recorder at $1.07 might require a minimum of 100 units. That's still only $107 for 100 recorders — a great deal if you're packing a lot of boxes — but know what you're committing to before you click buy.

Check Reviews — Shop Reviews, Not Just Product Reviews

Individual product reviews on Alibaba can be sparse. What matters more is the shop (supplier) review score and history. Look for:

• 4 stars or above
• Supplier has been on Alibaba for 2+ years
• A reasonable number of transactions — the more the better
• "Trade Assurance" badge — protects your payment if the order goes wrong

Always Check the Shipping Box — This Is the Most Important Step

Alibaba shipping options vary wildly. Here's what to look for:

• Best option: Alibaba Logistics. Managed by Alibaba directly — most reliable.
• What you want: A defined delivery window of 2–3 weeks with a range of only a few days (e.g., "Oct 3–Oct 7")
• Avoid: "1+ month" delivery estimates or date ranges of 1–2 months.  These aren't serious suppliers. 
• You won't get Amazon-style 4-day shipping. That's fine. Just know your window before National Collection Week.

Message the Supplier Before You Order

Send a quick message with the URL and ask these three things:

1. Is this item in stock?
2. If I order today, what day will it ship?
3. If I order today, when will it arrive?

• A prompt reply in clear English within 3 Chinese business days = good sign
• Slow reply;  unclear or inconsistent answer; or no reply = move on to another supplier
  
• China observes Golden Week (October 1–7) — factor this into your order timing if ordering in September
• Order by October 1 for National Collection Week

Negotiate

Its okay to try to haggle.  Its worth a try - especially if you are ordering a significant # of units.  Ask them to pay for shipping - or throw in extra units.  Ask, and it will be given.

Payment

Your seller will likely an invoice that you click through to pay.  Use the Alibaba payment system.  Don't do anything outside the platform.

Tariffs

At the moment, the global tariff situation is murky.  Its possible on tariffs are levied on your order.  It is possible that a tariff is added to the cost.  If the latest 12.5% is levied, on a $0.60 recorder, you would add 7.5 cents to each item.
